The statement from the Chair of judges who will select this year's winner of the Booker Prize merely confirms what is ridiculously obvious: Rushdie's latest work The Enchantress of Florence does not merit a place among the finalists for the prize. Midnight's Children is a great work of literature. More importantly, it did open the space for writing from the continent. At the same time, it cannot be denied that it did enormous disservice to literature. Every writer was proclaimed as a successor to Rushdie's voice or, even worse, every work was described as magic realist. Mr. Rushdie never again scale the heights that he did with his Midnight's Children and none of those who did ride the Rushdie wave leave a mark in the literary landscape.
Here's a piece from Guardian: Rushdie "not good enough" for Booker shortlist
Will there ever be a Joyce, Flaubert, or Borges from India or Sri Lanka?
